If I could speak to anybody who is thinking about total immersion swimming, I would say don't do it. I did, and now I regret it. But I would encourage anyone to take a step towards it, see how it feels and go from there.
Before I started, I felt a bit 'bogged down' with swimming. It didn`t feel natural, and I had trouble with my stroke speed and form. But as the lesson progressed, I felt the tension in my body begin to ease, my breathing become more relaxed and my pace pick up. After a few minutes my strokes felt so effortless, I was genuinely surprised by the speed of the movement. In the end, I did a few laps and felt a sense of achievement and accomplishment, something I never felt before in the pool.
I am a beginner in aikido and in swimming and I am beginning to learn how to use the two together, which I am so happy about. I enjoy the swimming lessons with my mom and dont mind getting wet. For me swimming is a great way to keep fit and I really appreciate that an aikido instructor is an aqua-jogger as well.
I also started to actually enjoy the pool for what it is. For the first few minutes, I had the most uncomfortable experience I have ever had in a swimming pool. My head was throbbing, my back and neck aching, I was gasping for air and feeling more and more nauseous and angry at having been forced to swim without a mask, and when I had to remove it in order to breath my eyes were burning-
