The film was first announced in late 2007, with Malayalam actor Mohanlal in the lead role.[14] However, he was replaced later on after the makers failed to secure his services. The second choice for the lead role was actor Sharman Joshi who was then reported to be playing a negative role.[14] Producers later announced that the role would be played by actor Naseeruddin Shah and that the movie would release in mid-2009.[14] The film's release was initially scheduled for 2010, but was subsequently postponed multiple times. The film's producer-director, Srinivas Motragi, was later quoted as saying that the delay was due to the makers trying to find a successful distributor.[14] According to Filmfare, the release of Lakshya was the sixth most anticipated Hindi movie release in 2009, behind Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Kaminey, Ek Tha Tiger, Shahid and 3 Idiots.[15][16]
