In his 1 May speech in Mahim, Raj Thackeray said: "If the north Indians are living in Mumbai because of our mercy to them, then it is time they left. The result is that the first thing a north Indian does when he/she visits Pune is to have a Puneri roti. In a normal Indian they would have a bag of peanuts [he said this while imitating a Puneri] but for only pigeons and a Dahi (sev) [milk-filled doughnut] sit in his pursu (handbag) and eat peanuts. The north Indian will never be a Marathi and the only future he has in Maharashtra is that of a hindura (scrub).". The following week, Raj termed people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as "un-Indian". On 4 May, in another interview to a Marathi radio station he said, "In Maharashtra there is no more north Indian. They are just called hindus [sic] for their culture which we are proud of [...] We could not tolerate this Indian attitude so we bid farewell to every north Indian [...] Now if you see the Nirbhay students of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Postgraduate College [for B.Ed], they study Marathi and Hindi so that they get to know the culture of Maharashtra. In future you need not come to Shivaji Park. But if you want to come to the Dadar railway station [...] and you expect to be accommodated then it is a matter of goodwill on our side". After this speech, unspecified police action was taken against the MNS.[136]
In his 1 May speech in Mahim, Raj Thackeray said: "This city was Marathi. When it turned non-Marathi, we took the challenge. Retain the city, or let it be Marathi, save but its culture. If people from Uttar Pradesh need to be treated with dignity then they should be made to study Marathi and Hindi".[137] On 4 May, Raj also said, "[North Indians] are also migrants and they are visitors and when we welcome them, we treat them well. For that I do not mean that we invite them to our homes. d2c66b5586
